Edison, the world-famous inventor, welded a small piece of metal near the carbon filament of the light bulb while studying the life of the incandescent light bulb. As a result, he discovered a strange phenomenon: Although the metal pieces are not in contact with the filament, if a voltage is applied between them, the filament will generate a current, which tends to the nearby metal pieces. Where did this mysterious current come from? Edison couldn't explain it either, but he took the time to patent the invention and called it the "Edison effect." Later, it was proved that the current is generated because the hot metal can emit electrons to the surrounding. But it was Fleming, a British physicist and electrical engineer, who first predicted that this effect would have practical value.

  Due to the disadvantages of large size, high power consumption, severe heat generation, short life, low power utilization efficiency, fragile structure and the need for high-voltage power supply, most of its uses have now been basically replaced by solid-state device transistors.
